Surrounded by the Chuckchi Sea, near the northern tip of Alaska, is Sarichef Island. This small strip of inhabited land gained worldwide attention in 2008 as it is rapidly disappearing into the sea due to advanced melting of the protective sea ice and permafrost.
Assembled from high resolution audio recordings made at twenty-four equidistant locations around Sarichef, the resulting multi-channel sound installation and accompanying CD The Island (infrequency, 2014) forms an auditory record of this unique geographical location before it is lost to the impacts of climate change.
This project was generously supported by a grant from the Canada Council for the Arts.
